would / could

英語の助動詞の中で、その使い方がむつかしい助動詞は would とcould でしょう。

まず native のように would / could は will / can の過去形ではなく別の言葉と考えるのがよいでしょう。

would / could は原則として過去を表さなくて現在または未来を表す、というように頭を切り替える必要があります。

そして、過去をあらわすのは例外と考えるわけです。

 

would が過去を表す場合

1. 過去の習慣

   When he had a problem to solve, he would work at it until he found  an answer.

2. 過去の強い意志

   I tried to refuse his invitation, but he wouldinsist on my coming.

 

could が過去をあらわす場合

1. 否定形

   I couldn't understand the question.

2. 知覚動詞と一緒に使われるとき

   Then I could feel the love from my parents again.

3. 1回きりでなく、連続して何かができたことをあらわす(過去の能力)

   In my collge days I could pull an slll-nighter.
